Sipping Your Way Through December: Wine 21

Conte Brandolini d’Adda Stomo Merlot 2019

Here’s the 21st installment of The Wine Chef’s December "Advent Calendar" wine series.

Conte Brandolini d’Adda winery, based in Italy’s Friuli region, is known for its focus on quality. The Stomo Merlot 2019 is a great example, offering something a little different for Merlot fans.

At 12.5% ABV, this wine is lively, medium-bodied, and easy to enjoy. It’s not quite like the fruit-driven Merlots from California or the more austere ones from Bordeaux. Instead, it’s its own thing, blending a little of both styles into something uniquely Friulian.

This Merlot’s inviting aromas immediately draw you in, with cherry and candied fruit notes. Yet, it shifts to something more savory and earthy on the palate. Cherry and raspberry are at the forefront, but then green bell pepper (it reminded me of Cab Franc!), blackcurrant, violet, and a touch of pine forest floor shine through. The bright acidity keeps everything fresh and vibrant, making it a great choice for food pairings or just sipping on its own.

It’s not the easiest wine to find in the U.S., but I found it on LiquorCave.com for just $16.99—a steal at that price! If you’re looking for a Merlot with a bit of a twist, Conte Brandolini’s Stomo Merlot 2019 is well worth checking out.
