Somms And Sliders Event In NYC Pairs Great Burgers With Napa Valley Wines
/Talk about mouthwatering — The Colorado Lamb Burger paired with a Classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. "A really juicy wine for a really juicy burger!” — A.J. Ojeda-Pons, Wine Director at The Lambs Club
If you love burgers and don't know about "Somms and Sliders" — happening in NYC right now — you need to know! This third annual, two and a half week long event (through 11/5) celebrates excellence in American food and wine. Some of the best chefs and sommeliers in New York have created the ultimate pairings of burgers with Napa Valley wines.
Organized by Napa Valley Vintners, a non-profit trade association representing more than 530 wineries, "Somms & Sliders" comes after a couple of harrowing weeks in Northern California wine country. Devastating wildfires blazed out of control and resulted in the loss of many homes, businesses and even lives. Thankfully, most of the fires have now been contained and participating in this event is yet another way to support Northern California wine country as they work to recover and rebuild.
David Gordon, Wine Director at Tribeca Grill with The Daily Burger, a blend of chuck, Brisket and Short Rib topped with bacon jam and a cheese and ale sauce. He chose a Napa Charbono (I had never heard of that grape before!) to pair with this flavorful burger. David says a concentrated Charbano has "balanced flavor with ripe fruit and fresh acidity" making it a great pairing.
Ganna Federova, Beverage Director at City Winery with Lamb Tzaziki Sliders paired with a Napa Valley Cab Franc. Ganna says that the wine is "rich and complex enough to complement lamb meat, and its floral freshness pairs delightfully with the zesty feta and herby creaminess of the tzaziki.”
Christian Fentress, Sommelier at Morrell Wine Bar & Cafe paired pork belly sliders topped with cabbage slaw and served on a brioche bun with a Napa Red Blend. "Our choice of a Napa Red Blend with such a fresh, vibrant red and bramble fruit and warm spice character that it works hand in hand complimenting the flavors coming from the pork, and it also has a lively acidity to it that cuts through the richness of the slider"
Amanda Streibel, Lead Sommelier at Charlie Palmer Steak, paired the Famous 50-50 Burger (the patty is made with half bacon and half beef and topped with caramelized onion jam!) with a complex Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Amanda says that "The caramelized onion jam adds a sweet touch which complements the ripe fruit quality in the wine, which has enough oak to stand up to the heavy burger.”
The following restaurants have created some out-of-this-world burgers and picked out the perfect Napa wines to go with them. Read more at https://sommsandsliders.com
